I like it short!

Some of us are averse to change. But others like me are constantly in search for a change that is not permanent. Preferring a change and changing are two different things. I may like the change, but I don’t necessarily want to make that move to change.  This is because the change that I crave for is not in my comfort zone. I feel the need to change; but I don’t want to change. This is the constant battle of contrasting thoughts. Two ideas- both compelling, but both antithesis of each other. Which one do I pick?Quote of the day

If you’ve been following me on my social media channels, you’ll know that a few months ago, I decided to sport a bob cut. It’s a curly bob that accentuates my jawlines. This was a welcome change but definitely not the most easiest one. The decision to cut my hair short took me over a year. Any low point in my life, I linked it to my hair cut. The change I needed in my life was replaced by the change in my hair cut. The hair cut symbolised the change that I wanted in my life at that point of time. But this was a gradual change.  I went from long hair to a little short hair then a litter shorter and until I finally decided to go for the hair cut I’ve been hoping to have – the bob cut!

In 2015, I noticed a lot of people going for the short hair look. I was intrigued by their decision. Was it as difficult for them to decide to go ‘short’ almost against the norms after having maintaining a longer hair?

I quizzed a few women who went from longer hair to short hair to understand their perspective.

Read on to know what triggers women to go short! 🙂

Curly Bob Cut

Why did you decide to cut your hair short?

A bad hair day and a terrible mood. The hair cut cheered me up! Maintaining long hair had become tedious and short hair was a welcome change

What do you prefer- wearing your hair long or short?

I enjoy wearing my hair short. It’s convenient, less hassle to manage and it seems like your hair finally has started to listen to you.

How did everyone around you react to your hair cut? (your family, friends and others)

I received mixed responses. My family was flabbergasted. My mother took offense to my cutting my hair short and even refused to speak to me for a day. Friends were divided on their opinions.

Does people’s opinion about your hair cut affect you?

No. The reason I chose to cut my hair short was because I wanted a change.  I didn’t cut my hair because people wanted me to!

Why did you decide to cut your hair short?

I decided to cut my hair because I wanted to. It was something I had been thinking about since a long time. I wanted a pixie and I finally pulled up some courage to cut my hair.

What do you prefer- wearing your hair long or short?

I prefer my hair short, not as short as a pixie though. Maybe a bob.

How did everyone around you react to your hair cut? (your family, friends and others)

My mom herself has had short hair for a long time so she never discouraged me. My friends and work colleagues were shocked and said why I took such a drastic step or if any epiphany has led to me cutting my hair

Does people’s opinion about your hair cut affect you?

Not really. However after this haircut I am more confident about myself and the fact that I can carry short hair.

Why did you decide to cut your hair short?

I get bored of long hair very soon. Plus, I craved for an extremely refreshed look after a long time. I don’t give my hair regular cuts, but when I do, I prefer looking a lot different.

What do you prefers wearing your hair long or short?

I prefer short hair. Low maintenance haircuts are preferred.

How did everyone around you react to your hair cut? (your family, friends and others)

They loved it.

Does people’s opinion about your hair cut affect you?

Not at all. I am the one who needs to be impressed with my haircut, day after day.

Why did you decide to cut your hair short?

My hair is straight, black and look identical after most haircuts. Short is the only way to make it look different. I needed a change in look desperately. The length of my hair usually depicts a state of mind for me as well. If I have gone super short, it usually means a low phase or depression, which my friends have now learned to recognise over the years.

What do you prefer- wearing your hair long or short?

Every couple of years I go super short. Had done this last almost 4 – 5 years ago.

How did everyone around you react to your hair cut? (your family, friends and others)

Mom hates it when I cut my hair, she has put in a lot of effort in growing my hair during childhood. She likes my hair long. Used to have two long plaits through school. Some friends loved my short hair, while others think it makes me look fat. Sister loves it, she thinks it makes me look happy and bubbly.

Does people’s opinion about your hair cut affect you?

No. Stopped caring what others think of my hair long ago.

Why did you decide to cut your hair short?

Never had short hair in my life. Wanted to experiment.

What do you prefer- wearing your hair long or short?

Both.

How did everyone around you react to your hair cut? (your family, friends and others)

Mom loved it…Father hated it. Most of my friends really liked it.

Does people’s opinion about your hair cut affect you?

Nope.

To summarize why women love short hair:

  • Haircut is symbolic of the change we crave in our day to day life
  • A good hair cut makes one feel elevated about themselves
  • We like the attention– the new hair cut that is so stark from the previous ones commands that public attention and we bask in the glory. We like the shock and awe that the hair cut generates
  • If someone doesn’t like our hair, it doesn’t matter. The hair cut was for personal reasons, not public

Have you ever wanted to change your hairstyle because it deeply connects with what you want in life? I’d love to talk to you about this. Let’s connect 🙂
